James S. Walton holds a Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University (Biomechanics, 1981); a M.S. from Stanford University (Applied Mechanics, 1976); a M.A. from Michigan State University (Education, 1970); and a Diploma in Physical Education and Certificate in Education from Leeds University (1968).
From 1979 to 1985, he was a Senior Research Scientist in the Biomedical Science Department of the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan, and was responsible for the supervision of the Instrumentation Group servicing the needs of that Department. In 1985, he joined a small high-tech startup based in Santa Rosa, California and helped them develop software for quantifying motion using video images. During his tenure with this organization, Walton served as Vice-President of Applications Engineering and assisted with the development of a three-dimensional tracking capability. On October 1, 1988, he formed 4DVideo, a company that specializes in non-contact motion measurement and motion reconstruction.
Walton is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Biomechanics, the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the Human Factors Society (HFS), the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB), the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), Sigma Xi, and the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). He is a Fellow of SPIE and is currently serving a six-year term as the US National Delegate to the International Congress on High-Speed Photography and Photonics. He is also a Certified Photogrammetrist, and has presented many technical papers on the use of image-based motion measurement in such diverse fields as oceanography, marine biology, noise and vibration, vehicle dynamics, product design and development, flight-test engineering, ergonomics, biomechanics, human and equine gait analysis, forensic science, blasting technology, computer-aided engineering, machine vision, experimental mechanics, high-speed photography and videography, and the performance of elite athletes.

Walton is married to Dorcas A. Walton. They have two children, Kirstyn and Lars.
